Album Review

Only one year after the success of  The Extremist, Joe Satriani released a double-CD! Is there twice as many songs as regular a CD? Not exactly.

In fact Time Machine included to very differents CD. The first one reatures 14 compositions, unreleased or re-arranged from his first EP, very heterogeneous in the inspiration and versatile in the realistation.  Here’s the time machine joe’s talking about! The second CD is a kaleidoscope of the last american tours Joe did, a retrospective of many live shots.

The deep « Time Machine » and his reverberation effetcs is perhaps the best song of the album, a true masterpiece, « The Mighty Turtle Head » and the two « Banana Mango » bring a few exoticism and originality, while the fast « Dweller On The Threshold » and the stressfull « I Am Become Death » darkens the global atmoshpere, which will not stop « Speed Of Light » to add some fun. The ballads are still there, a cover of « All Alone » from Billie Holiday has been re-arranged by Joe, and also « Thinking Of You » or « Baroque ».  « Crazy » reminds us thevery particular « Strange » from Flying In A Blue Dream.

Meanwhile, the live is interesting in the fact that Joe played the original composition but changed a lot of things and improvised a lot. The band also brings and incredible energy, with a special mention for « Echo ».

Finally, Time Machine is a very complete CD, the jacket is full of pictures and very detailed and shall please Joe’s fans, of course, but also the people who like quality music. This record is interesting by all the musical styles he uses, a good journey in the space-time continuum.
